What is POSM?
Articles

POSM (Point of Sale Materials) are promotional materials used at the point of sale. Simply put, they are the first things a buyer notices when walking into a store.
For example:
posters;
stands;
price tags;
promotional shelves (special display units);
booklets and flyers.
All of these serve one purpose: to catch the buyer's attention and increase sales.
What is the main function of POSM?
When a customer walks into a store, they do not always arrive with a clear plan. In most cases, the decision is made on the spot.
This is where POSM does its work.
Its main functions are to:
make the product visible;
distinguish it from other products;
give the buyer quick, clear information;
increase impulse buying.
A well-designed POSM can turn even a simple product into an "interesting offer".
What should a good POSM look like?
A few simple but important rules make POSM effective:
Simplicity. Keep the text short, clear and easy to read. Buyers do not read long messages.
Appearance. Colors, design and shape should attract attention, but too much decoration becomes distracting.
The right location. Even the best POSM will not work if it is in the wrong place. It should sit at the entrance, near the checkout, or right next to the product.
A clear offer. The discount, promotion or benefit must be stated clearly, for example: "-20%", "1+1" or "New product".
In which industries is POSM used?
POSM is used in almost every area of trade:
food and drinks;
everyday consumer goods;
cosmetics;
household appliances;
pharmacy products.
Each industry uses POSM differently. For example:
in a supermarket, to prompt a quick decision;
in a hardware store, to explain the product.
Why is POSM important?
Many companies spend a lot of money on advertising, but the buyer makes the final decision in the store.
If a product does not stand out at that moment, the return on that advertising falls.
POSM is:
the "last step" between advertising and the sale;
a tool that prompts the customer to act.
What does POSM effectiveness depend on?
Not every POSM produces the same result. Its effectiveness depends on:
the target audience (for whom?);
the location (where?);
competition (what else is nearby?);
the product's price and type.
That is why POSM should be carefully thought through, not simply put out.
Summary
POSM is not ordinary advertising. It is a tool that directly increases sales.
When used correctly:
the product is visible;
the buyer decides quickly;
sales increase.
When used incorrectly:
it is ignored;
it wastes money.
This is why businesses need to take a strategic approach to POSM.
